There has been a long debate about stress-related acne among the scientific community.
However, recent studies have confirmed that stress causes worsening of acne in two
different ways:

First, our bodies react to stress by producing hormones from our
adrenal glands. One of these hormones is testosterone, which
stimulates sebaceous glands to secrete more sebum

Second, it has been established that stress can decrease the
woundhealing capacity of our immune systems up to 40%. This
triggers inflammation in the body and since acne is mainly an
inflammatory disease, it worsens.

In a study, published in the Swedish journal Acta Dermato-Venereologica, researchers looked at the relationship between stress levels and acne severity in 94 teenagers with an average age of 15. Most of the teenagers had mild to moderate acne.

Researchers measured the teens’ self-reported stress levels and acne severity at a time of
high stress (just before midterm exams) and at a time of low stress (two months after the
end of exams). The results revealed that teenagers who were under high levels of stress
were 23 percent more likely to have increased acne severity.

One way to check if you suffer from stress-induced acne, or to know if your stress levels
aggravate your acne, is to be aware of when breakouts tend to occur, and examine your
stress levels from the preceding week.

This will help you find out if your acne breakouts match up with the times that your body
is feeling stressed. Try to identify what is stressful to you.

Try to stay relaxed by practicing daily relaxation techniques, such as meditation or yoga.

When you fell anxious, lay
down, out-breath long and slow, and close your eyes for a few minutes.

Try to break the worry cycle. Most people worry about the same few things repeatedly.
These items are like a nagging broken record, playing over and over again.
